How the ACA Subsidy Calculator Works

Your subsidy (officially a "Premium Tax Credit") is based on your income relative to the Federal Poverty Level, your household size, and the benchmark Silver plan cost in your area.

๐Ÿ“ Step 1: Federal Poverty Level

We calculate your income as a % of the 2026 FPL for your household size. This determines how much you're expected to contribute toward your premium.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Step 2: Your Required Contribution

Your required contribution is capped at a % of your income. At 150% FPL it's 0%. At 400%+ FPL it's capped at 8.5% under enhanced subsidy rules.

๐Ÿงฎ Step 3: Subsidy = The Gap

Your subsidy equals the benchmark Silver premium minus your required contribution. If Silver costs $450/mo and your cap is $100, you get a $350/mo tax credit.

๐Ÿ“‹ Step 4: Apply to Any Plan

Your subsidy stays the same regardless of which plan you pick. Use it on Bronze to pay less, or apply it to Gold for richer benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this ACA subsidy calculator?

Very accurate for ballpark estimates. We use 2026 FPL guidelines and real average benchmark Silver premiums for each of our 29 licensed states. Actual amounts vary by county โ€” a broker gives you exact figures with your ZIP code.

What if my income changes during the year?

Report income changes to Healthcare.gov (or your state exchange) as soon as possible. Underestimating means you may owe back some subsidies at tax time. Lower income means more help.

Can I get a subsidy if I'm self-employed?

Yes. Self-employed individuals use net profit after business deductions as their income for subsidy purposes. This often means higher subsidies than W-2 employees at the same gross income.

Does this include Cost Sharing Reductions (CSR)?

CSR estimates are reflected in the Silver plan deductible shown. Households at 100โ€“250% FPL who choose Silver plans receive enhanced CSR benefits โ€” deductibles as low as $300 and reduced co-pays.

What's the difference between metal tiers?

Bronze: you pay ~40% of costs after deductible. Silver: ~30%. Gold: ~20%. Platinum: ~10%. Higher tiers cost more monthly but much less when you actually use healthcare.

How do I actually enroll?

Open Enrollment is November 1 โ€“ January 15. Outside that, you need a qualifying life event. A licensed broker handles enrollment at no cost to you โ€” the broker fee is paid by the insurance company.
