Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers from licensed insurance experts.

How are ACA subsidies calculated?
Subsidies are based on your projected modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) compared to the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) and your household size. The lower your income, the bigger the subsidy. The benchmark is keeping the second-lowest-cost Silver plan to a percentage of your income.
What income counts for subsidies?
MAGI = Adjusted Gross Income + tax-exempt interest + foreign income + non-taxable Social Security. For self-employed, use net business income. Don't include child support, gifts, or SSI.
What if my actual income differs from my estimate?
At tax time, the IRS reconciles. If you under-estimated income, you may owe back some subsidy. If you over-estimated, you get a refund. Update your marketplace account if your income changes mid-year to avoid surprises.
Can I get a subsidy if my employer offers insurance?
Generally no — UNLESS your employer's plan is unaffordable (over 9.02% of household income for self-only coverage in 2025) or doesn't meet minimum value standards. Then you can qualify for marketplace subsidies.
Are subsidies still available after the COVID expansions?
Yes. The Inflation Reduction Act extended expanded subsidies through 2025, and the marketplace continues to offer enhanced premium tax credits. No income cliff at 400% FPL.
